Shoreham Port IMPORTANT REQUEST (updated Fri 24/08/07)
We have been asked by the Port Authority to pass on this message from the Adurni survey vessel. Please be considerate at all times to these guys. Loss of the arm to anglers would be a great shame for lack of a little courtesy. Is there any chance of you having a word with your members about keeping their lines clear from our survey boat? While surveying the approaches and entrance today I picked up a line around the GPS and radio antennas. While the vessel is travelling away from the rod the antenna act as an roundabout lifting the hook and weight from the seabed until it is flicked onto the boat and into the wheelhouse before the line becomes taught and gets catapulted off the boat. This is the second time this has happened now and I was lucky that i did not get hooked as the boat is travelling at 5 knots in the opposite direction. The problem is that I can not see their lines. They know how far and direction they have cast out, can see me working my way in towards them but do not seem to remove their lines until the last moment or until I ask them to. After the incident I did go over to the anglers and ask them all to wind in and not cast out again until I had passed but they complained nobody’s line had been caught and that I had not asked them to wind in. It’s the same old faces out on the arm, they have all seen this operation time and time again and I would have asked them to wind in after that run as usual. As I said this is the second similar incident. Not only is my safety in danger also the surveying vessel, GPS antenna, hydrographic echo sounder and laptop from flying weights. I
have handed in a report to the Harbour Master and our Health and Safety
manager. The worse case scenario is that the West and East Arms are
shut while surveying operations are in progress. Members frequently ask for the date of the club's next friendly meet on the West Arm and also if there are any midweek meets planned. In answer I can say that ALL our meets are friendly, but in order to enable as many as possible to plan ahead and attend, the whole year to December has been reviewed and the following dates have been picked on merit of tide and time (as normal there is no definite start or end time for each session the time stated being that of the high water followed by the predicted height) April: Wed 18th 12:45pm - 6.89m, Sun 29th 10:40am 5.22m May: Sun 20th 2:47pm - 6.05m June: Sun 3rd 1:35pm - 5.75m July: Sun 15th 12:49pm – 6.05m August: Thur 2nd 2.28pm - 6.43m, Sun 19th 3:57pm – 5.3m September: Sun 2nd 3.34pm – 6.24m , Fri 28th 12:57pm – 6.92m October: Sun 28th 12:21pm – 6.87m November: Sun 11th 11:45am – 5.75m, Sun 25th 11:18am – 6.62m December: Tue 11th 12:00pm – 5.61m |
